INT. MOTEL ROOM - DAY

As GRAY carefully crafts a wooden block, shavings gently cascade onto the table.

Meanwhile, TRAVIS diligently exercises on the floor, tuning in to the weather forecast on the TV. Finishing his routine, GRAY drops a peculiar humanoid carving onto TRAVIS, who examines it with curiosity.

CUT TO BLACK

In this brief yet rich scene, the possibilities for its visual presentation are endless. Each approach, while technically valid, carries a distinct intention.

The cinematographer's artistic choices not only shape the mood and style but also deeply influence the audience's engagement with the narrative. To navigate these decisions effectively, one must consider thematic elements, character dynamics, narrative progression, and emotional resonance.

In this course, we explore the art of visual storytelling guided by seasoned industry professionals. Through hands-on assignments, students delve into the intricacies of crafting compelling visuals, moving beyond the basics. This course is designed for all levels including those emerging in the craft of filmmaking. However, we do require previous knowledge and foundation to build upon. See below for full details on prerequisites.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Utilizing lighting to evoke mood and enhance emotional impact

  • Exploring focal length's role in character portrayal, spatial dynamics, and stylistic expression

  • Creating visual depth through strategic lighting and framing

  • Harnessing camera movement to control pacing and evoke mood

  • Crafting a distinct visual identity for each project
