Your choice of camera and your skill in using it are crucial for achieving great work in film and video production. While how you frame and follow action is more important than the camera itself, the camera does play a significant role.

While this class is designed with beginners in mind, offering a thorough introduction to camera operation and essential film and video production skills, it is also inclusive of students at all levels of experience, making it a valuable choice for those starting out or seeking to refresh their skills.

Course Overview:

  • Equip yourself with basic and essential skills for operating modern cameras used in film and video production

  • Learn hands-on with real gear and through compositional and shooting practices

  • Discuss key differences between types of film/video cameras on the market

Topics Covered:

  • Camera functions (resolution, frame rate, exposure, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, auto/manual function, and more)

  • Terms & concepts crucial for understanding camera operation

  • Types of DSLR cameras

  • Types of non-DSLR cameras

  • Composition & framing

  • Capturing audio

  • Lighting techniques

  • Accessories & tools (tripods, ND filter, LCD screen, zebras, light meter, histogram, follow focus, shoulder rig, cage, glidecam, portable recorders, and more)

Hands-On Experience:

  • Work with at least three different types of cameras and other film/video gear

  • Cameras used may include Canon XF400, Canon EOS Rebel, and Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro with lens kit

Prerequisite: None!

This course will take place at the Austin School of Film in one of our studio spaces, where all materials and equipment will be provided for the duration of the class. However, if you own a camera and would like to learn how to work with it, feel free to bring it along!

HOW CAN I START A PAYMENT PLAN?

Anyone is eligible for a payment plan for any class if they need it! Email us to get started on a payment plan at classes@austinfilmschool.org. We require 25% of the tuition cost at registration and can divide the remaining balance in up to 2 additional equal payments.

Cordelaine “Corey” Kline is an accomplished educator, videographer, photographer, and content creator based in Austin, TX. With a profound passion for storytelling, imagery, light, and cameras, Cordelaine is dedicated to inspiring and guiding students on their creative journey.

Having graduated from the esteemed University of Iowa Cinema program, Cordelaine brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom. Cordelaine's teaching philosophy centers around nurturing individual creativity and fostering a deep understanding of visual storytelling techniques.

In addition to teaching at the Austin School of Film, Cordelaine has a notable background in production, including producing the indie feature 'Diary of a Superhero,' which garnered the prestigious Award of Excellence from the Iowa Motion Picture Association.

Cordelaine's commitment to education and passion for content creation make them a valuable asset to any learning environment, where they strive to empower students to unleash their artistic potential and achieve their creative aspirations.
