Led by industry expert Travis Ward, this class is designed to empower filmmakers and media creators with the knowledge and skills needed to produce stunning cinematic visuals.

Topics covered include:

  • Explore the art and technology behind cinematic images

  • The fundamentals & workflow of prepping and operating cinema cameras, including Blackmagic, Sony, and RED models

  • Understand the key components that make up a cinematic image

  • Learn the differences between consumer and cinema cameras

  • The importance of lens selection

  • Essential topics such as cinema camera firmware setup, recording codecs, lens mount options, and recommended accessories

  • Practice shooting scenarios both indoors and outdoors

  • Work with additional gear like lights, tripods, and video monitoring equipment

  • Gain valuable experience testing the dynamic range of cinema cameras using DaVinci Resolve, a powerful post-production tool

By the end of the course, you'll not only be comfortable behind a professional cinema camera but also equipped with the knowledge and skills to bring your creative vision to life. Whether you're working on narrative films, music videos, corporate projects, or commercials, this class will take your camera game to the next level.

Prerequisites:

  • Prior film production knowledge is required, and comfort with filmmaking terminology is essential.

  • Completion of Camera Basics, DSLR Filmmaking, or equivalent experience with basic camera operation is highly recommended.

This course will take place at the Austin School of Film in one of our studio spaces, where all materials and equipment will be provided for the duration of the class. However, if you own a camera and would like to learn how to work with it, feel free to bring it along!

HOW CAN I START A PAYMENT PLAN?

Anyone is eligible for a payment plan for any class if they need it! Email us to get started on a payment plan at classes@austinfilmschool.org. We require 25% of the tuition cost at registration and can divide the remaining balance in up to 2 additional equal payments.

ABOUT THE EDUCATOR

Travis Ward is a seasoned Cinematographer and Video Producer based in Texas, with over 8 years of experience in the Austin film industry. His work spans a diverse range of projects, including narrative shorts, features, corporate videos, and creative collaborations with individual clients. In 2017, Travis transitioned to full-time self-employment as a filmmaker, showcasing his dedication to the craft.

Beyond his expertise behind the camera, Travis is also a skilled freelance editor and colorist. He specializes in using DaVinci Resolve to enhance and finalize his projects, adding a professional touch to every frame.
